Caring for diamond jewellery
Cleaning and storage considerations for the diamond, the setting and the metal around it.
Check before you clean
Follow instructions for the particular setting, metal, treatments and any other gemstones. If a stone moves or a setting looks damaged, stop wearing the piece and ask a qualified jewellery professional to inspect it.
Choose a gentle approach
GIA lists lint-free cloths, suitable jewellery solutions and household detergents among diamond-cleaning options. Confirm what is appropriate for the entire piece before choosing a cleaner; a diamond’s durability does not make every setting suitable for the same treatment.
Leave stronger methods to a professional
Avoid abrasive powders and home ultrasonic or steam cleaning. These devices can loosen stones; a professional should inspect the setting before using them.
Protect the setting as well as the stone
Diamonds resist scratches but can chip under impact and scratch precious metals. Store pieces separately and protect them from knocks. A loose stone can wear against its own setting.
Before you decide
Questions to ask before you buy
- Are any treatments or other gemstones relevant to cleaning?
- Is the setting secure?
- What inspection or repair is appropriate for this piece?
